Aquatic Therapy: Making Waves

Aquatic Therapy is a form of physical therapy performed in the water to assist in unloading the body during exercise to promote movement with reduced pain and difficulty. The unique properties of water help reduce compressive forces through the joints, reduce inflammation, and promote muscle relaxation resulting in improved pain-free movement. Aquatic therapy is a viable option for individuals who have difficulty performing exercises on land due to pain, mobility, or balance deficits.

Aquatic therapy also offers an opportunity for earlier weight bearing exercise for post-surgical patients leading to accelerated rehabilitative results compared to land based exercise alone.

Additional benefits of aquatic therapy include:

  • Improved range of motion
  • Improved flexibility
  • Improved joint awareness
  • Strength and resistance training
  • Improved stability
  • Improved balance
  • Stress Reduction

Diagnoses that may benefit from aquatic therapy:

  • Arthritis
  • Low back pain
  • Chronic pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Orthopedic injuries
  • Joint replacement surgery
