Muscle Activation Technique® (MAT®)

What is Muscle Activation Technique ® (MAT®)?

MAT® is a non-invasive technique, designed to balance the muscular system of people of all ages. It assesses and corrects muscular imbalances, joint instability and limitations in range of motion. MAT® can be utilized to treat pain from anywhere from acute to chronic stages.

What can MAT® do for you?

In order for our muscles to contract efficiently and on-demand, a message is sent from our brain and spinal cord to the muscles. This happens automatically in our everyday activities such as walking, rolling over in bed, and performing in athletic/recreational activities. Muscles can lose the ability to tolerate these forces through stress (physical or emotional), trauma and overuse. As a result, the brain is not able to communicate effectively with the muscular system, which alters our ability to contract on demand. This puts our joints at risk and makes us vulnerable to injury! MAT® uses a very specific assessment in order to assess, prepare and improve the ability of the muscular system to function optimally.

Why choose MAT®?

Traditional therapy has taught us that if a muscle is tight, we should stretch it. Although this can be a helpful way to gain range of motion, it can make our joints vulnerable to injury as the muscle may be weak within its new range of motion. MAT® addresses the weakness as opposed to the tightness. MAT® tests each individual muscle in the vulnerable area and treats accordingly, and can increase the stability of the joints, resulting in increased mobility. This process improves the ability of muscles to tolerate forces. If a muscle can tolerate forces more efficiently, it reduces the chance of injury and helps speed up recovery from injury. MAT® focuses on the source of the problem rather than the symptoms and can help return you to a pain-free life!

Our goal is to return you to your lifestyle as quickly as possible. At Bodyworks Physical Therapy, Relief is Right Here.
